Our Teachers

Our teachers are all from our member schools and represent those schools in the online environment. They receive extensive training in teaching online in addition to having taken the Teaching and Learning through eLearning AQ course.

My name is Rebecca Ren, and my students always call me 任老师 (Rén lǎoshī). I hold a PhD from Beijing Normal University (北京师范大学) and currently teach at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School.

Ms Shen teaches business and mathematics at The Bishop Strachan School. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, biking and crochet.

With over 20 years of teaching experience, including three in Japan, Ms. Phillips brings a unique blend of cultural insights to her classroom. Before embracing education, she worked in Toronto’s film industry, enriching her understanding of storytelling and media representation. She is passionate about continuing her learning journey alongside her students.

As well as teaching, I am an avid reader of all kinds of literature and am putting together a relatively decent rare book collection. I believe the most important part of teaching is connecting with students and helping them feel a part of a community, even if it is happening online.

Mr. Belley lived and taught in South Korea from 2011 to 2013. He earned his Master’s Degree of Education in 2015, and has been teaching at Elmwood School ever since. He lives in Ottawa with his wife and two children, ages 7 and 9.

Sylvie Luo is a dedicated Mandarin teacher and IB Chinese A Literature instructor, also serving as an IB Mandarin ab initio examiner. She is committed to continuous learning and innovation, inspiring her students through her engaging teaching approach.

After graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada, I completed my teaching education at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, then worked at several different schools including Trinity College School. When I’m not in the classroom (or virtual classroom!), I am coaching on the rugby pitch or spending time with my wife and poodle, Charlie.

Mrs. Stoneman has been teaching at Appleby College for 20 years, where she also leads the debate team to frequent national championships. Her commitment to education is matched by her love for the outdoors; she averages over 3000 km of walking each year, is an avid swimmer, and enjoys spending time on the shores of Lake Ontario, walking or paddleboarding.

Bailey Coyle is a teacher at Trafalgar Castle School. The student voice is an important part her classroom (online or in person). She is always looking for opportunities for students to express their thinking, opinions, and interpretations, and for them to become confident in their perspectives. She loves outdoor activities such as hiking, as well as reading, cooking, and travelling.

Matthew Phillips teaches at Havergal College and has also taught and worked as a marker and judge of assessment standards in New South Wales, Australia. He holds a BEd and MA from the University of Sydney. He enjoys spending time with his young family, running, and reading books that explore the many fascinating aspects of human experience.

Mr. Lewis has been teaching since 1997, mostly at St. Andrew’s College. He has always taught math, but in 2011 he happily expanded his focus to include teaching Canadian and International Law online. Mr. Lewis enjoys music, tennis, and skiing, and he currently lives in Newmarket with his wife, an entitled cat, and a rambunctious Labradoodle.

I am passionate about introducing the Chinese language and cultural traditions to students who are eager to learn about China. I encourage them to acquire the language naturally through real-life contexts and broaden their horizons by watching a variety of Chinese programs to enhance their language sense and cultural understanding.

Tamlyn Pickering is an experienced educator who has taught in both South Africa and Canada, bringing a global perspective to her teaching. She currently teaches Data Management and is passionate about helping students develop real-world analytical skills through engaging, student-centered learning. Tamlyn is committed to making data meaningful, accessible, and relevant for all learners.

I am a Science teacher at Havergal College and have taught online with ELCC since 2009. When I am not teaching, I enjoy volunteering at the Toronto International Film Festival and visiting Ontario Parks.

With a background as a mutual fund accountant, I bring financial expertise into the classroom. I have a strong interest in instructional design and AI-enhanced learning and am passionate about creating engaging, student-centered learning experiences through project-based learning and the integration of technology. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my children, golfing, and travelling to sunny destinations.

Owain Jones is the Head of Computer and Technological Studies at St. Clement’s School, having previously taught in South Korea, Indonesia, and Switzerland. Owain is the mentor to his school’s robotics and programming teams, guiding students as they explore real-world applications of technology. Owain enjoys cycling and working on projects that combine his interests in engineering, coding, and design.

Myke Healy is the Assistant Head of Senior School for Teaching & Learning at Trinity College School. He has worked closely with ELCC for sixteen years and is currently a Doctoral Student at the University of Calgary researching generative AI in education. He also serves as chair of the board of Camp Kawartha.

Mr. Fillion teaches Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School. He mentors the SWAT 771 FIRST Robotics team and enjoys his cats, crystal growing and playing video games. He is teaching with eLearning Consortium Canada for the first time offering a very interactive Grade 11 Computer Science course.

Terry Prezens is an award-winning STEM educator with decades of experience, recognized with the Canadian Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. He has led Ontario RoboCup Junior and VEX teams to global competitions, developed online and AP computer science courses, and supported programming contests for Ontario’s Independent school. Terry has taught diverse K–12 and adult learners, including those on the Autism spectrum. His favourite memories involve kayaking with his wife and daughter.
